The Diocese in Action
Christian Unity
|
On the night before his death, Jesus prayed
that his followers 'might all be one', as he and God the Father
are one. Different histories, understandings, structures and
practices have grown up amongst the various Christian denominations
(Church of England, Roman Catholic, Methodist etc.). Despite
many centuries of division however, there is a powerful movement
afoot today to make Jesus' prayer more of a reality. Increasingly
today we worship and work together in a rich variety of ways.
All this forms part of what is called the Ecumenical
Movement.

| The Diocesan Council for
Mission and Unity, linked nationally to the Church of England's
Council for Christian Unity (website cofe.anglican.org/ccu),
is responsible for encouraging and coordinating ecumenical work
within the diocese. |
| Local Ecumenical Partnerships
(LEPs) bring together two or more denominations in an even more
direct way through sharing resources such as buildings or personnel.
Some even have one minister acting on behalf of all the participating
denominations (eg. C of E, Methodist, URC) in a single congregation.
Other LEPs cover different kinds of work such as Industrial
Mission in Derbyshire, work among the Asian community in Derby
and university chaplaincy. Derbyshire has around 20 LEPs. |
