The Diocesan Board of Education has developed closer links with
the 78 controlled schools in recent years but does not have the
same responsibilty for them as the aided schools. They are controlled
by the Local Education Authority and the Church appoints only a
minority of the governors (the foundation governors). When the 1944
Education Act allowed the parochial, endowed and national schools
a choice of aided or controlled status these were the schools where
the managers no longer had the funds or the will to maintain them.
They became more like county schools but with the proviso that Collective
Worship had to reflect their denominational foundation. Controlled
schools can now apply to become aided under the 1998 School Standards
and Framework Act. A number are actively seeking a change of status.
