Church in Action
... in Parishes throughout
the Diocese
St Thomas'
Church, Somercotes, is assisting Vision Aid Overseas by collecting
second hand spectacles for people in developing
countries. Donated spectacles in good condition are taken free
of charge by a specialist optical carriers to one of the prisons
which work with VAO for detailed examination, grading and packing.
The spectacles are then shipped overseas for use by teams of volunteer,
unpaid opticians from England working
with needy people
abroad.
A spokesperson for the parish said: "Since January
2003, St Thomas's has sent over 13,000 pairs after checking and
throwing out the bad ones! This is a good cause to help at no
cost to anybody."
Parish contact: Granville Stone, 01773

"Breakfast at Teanies" -
A team at Holy Trinity, Tansley, raised £1327 for church
funds by serving 78 full English breakfasts on Sundays during November.
Breakfast sittings were hosted by Teanie Dornan, a member of the
church,
along with her husband and a team of volunteers,
at her
local B&B home.
Parish Priest, the Rev’d Richard Reade,
remarked: “We are enormously grateful for all the hard work
of Teanie and her team. It’s a great example of people using
their gifts and talents to support the local church.”

Tideswell’s church charity shop topped £100,000
this summer. When the Restoration Fund for the ‘Cathedral
in the Peak’ was begun, church member Joyce Chapman decided
to open an old shop that her family had run, and has since given
many hours to sorting, checking and pricing donated items, then
opening up the shop several times a week and serving locals and
visitors. The items come from far and wide, as do those
buying them, and the small shop is packed to the ceiling with everything
imaginable.
All the money raised goes to the Restoration
Fund, for which her brother was the treasurer until his death,
and now
her sister-in-law has taken over the role – part of a long
association between the Chapman family and Tideswell Church. Congratulations
to Joyce on reaching this landmark figure.

We reported in October last year
on Sanctum, a weekly Sunday service at 6pm at Clay Cross, aimed
at teens and young adults, which
expresses church in an informal style and specialises in contemporary
rock music. Sanctum now features in a new DVD – on the
edge - released by Fresh Expressions (a national initiative backed
by the Archbishop of Canterbury).

If you are looking for a Sunday evening service that is different,
then why not try Café Praise. Café Praise is a
modern, informal service set in a relaxed, café-style
environment, complete with refreshments throughout. It is held
on the 3rd Sunday of most months at 6.00pm in the West Hallam
Methodist Church, near Ilkeston. The service is ecumenical, supported
by the Anglican and Methodist clergy in the West Hallam area
and is just about to celebrate its 2nd Anniversary.
The intention for Café Praise is to provide a different
form of worship for people who might not be comfortable with traditional
church and for those who prefer a modern praise service. There
is a worship band that plays modern praise music, including its
own original songs, supported by multi-media material that is used
to teach God’s word in a simple, yet thought-provoking way.
If this sounds like the kind of service that would appeal to you,
or someone you know, contact Tony (0115 932 4258) or Martin (01332
881421) for more information and to check service dates.”
