Working for social responsibility in the Diocese of Derby
In a broken World, those who fight for social
justice and transformation to help reveal God's Kingdom are
very busy people indeed! In the Diocese of Derby, Stella Collishaw
and Joy Bates are no exception.
Working within the Council for Social Responsibility,
it's Stella's and Joy's job to 'turn up the volume of the
Christian voice' to work against injustice on a huge range
of social issues, from discrimination on race or disability
to extreme poverty at home and abroad.
They see themselves as part of a broad team
of people across the diocese, clergy and lay, who have specific
community and/or social responsibilities. Stella and Joy offer
practical help, advice and research funding opportunities
to help others bring important social projects to fruition.
They can respond to Government or Church
consultation documents, help parishes to implement legislation,
for example the Disability Discrimination Act, and respond
to individual requests for information.
Joy and Stella make it a priority to respond
to requests of churches who are developing community projects,
or who are partners in this work, managing available funds
and giving grants towards those projects, and especially to
needy lone parents.
The workload is split geographically where
possible, Joy in the Derby Archdeaconry and Stella in the
Chesterfield Archdeaconry.
