My Faith: Ruth Booker

Mother of two Ruth Booker said her daughter
was the reason she started going back to church. Her daughter
had been invited to join the church choir at St John the Baptist,
in Dronfield, and was due to sing at a service for the first
time. She requested that Ruth came along to support her.
Having not been to church for quite a while, Ruth admitted
to being a little hesitant, but felt she needed to be there
for her daughter.
On arrival, she found that the people in church were very
friendly and welcoming and was pleasantly surprised that she
enjoyed the service. She decided to go along to support her
daughter the following week too and then got into a regular
habit of attending each week.
She said: “There was one week when my daughter couldn’t
attend church, but I decided I would still go on my own and
it was then that I realised I was hooked! It’s not that
I felt drawn towards going to church, but rather that it was
drawn towards me. It sort of fell into my lap.”
And since attending church, Ruth’s
outlook on life has begun to change.
“I think I have become less pessimistic about the bad
things that happen in life. I complain less and thank God more
that things have not been worse. I feel that although we’ve
had difficult times now and again, like everyone does, things
could have been so much worse, and that’s given me a
real sense that God has been watching over our family,” said
Ruth, who added that the church had been supportive of her
family during one particularly upsetting time for her daughter.
Both of Ruth’s daughters, aged
11 and nine, are now members of the choir and are also enjoying
their church involvement.
Ruth works as a marketing officer in
Chesterfield and formerly worked for a newspaper. Using her
professional skills, she
is supporting the church with publicity work which she believes
is her way of ‘giving back’ to the church family
that has been so supportive of her during the last three years
since she went back to church.
