Introducing the University of Derby Chaplaincy

In the midst of all this emotional and physical change that University brings the Chaplaincy is here to help students to adjust to new ways of being, and embody the love of God.

It might be that we help students make connections with a Church or faith community in Buxton, Derby or wherever their studies have brought them. It might be that we are helping them explore questions about faith, God, life, the universe and everything in it. Being sensitive to our multi-faith context does not mean we cannot be authentic to the gospel in our life and witness.

Or it might be that we are the ones offering them mugs of tea and a listening ear, irrespective of whether the things that are bothering them are to do with religion  We’re here for all students to provide care and support when life is tough, and work in partnership with other support services to ensure holistic pastoral care is available for staff and students.

The chaplaincy is also here to provide a voice for social justice in the institution, which we do through the ordinary (e.g. our weekly fair-trade lunches) and the ridiculous (e.g. abseiling down the towers at Kedleston Road dressed as a giant fair-trade banana, or building a slum on campus and linking with projects in Bangladesh).

It is great that the Diocese is committed to maintaining a presence for Christ here in the University of Derby. The University appreciates our commitment to them, and our partnership in the formation and care of University community.
