As part of the continuing 75th anniversary celebrations of
the Diocese of Derby and its Cathedral, a group young people
from Derbyshire will join thousands of others from across
the globe when they visit a Christian community in Taizé,
France next week.
The Taizé community is well known in Christian circles
of all denominations for its devotion to quiet contemplation,
prayer and simple, rhythmic patterns of worship. People from
all over the world flock there for visits of several days
or even weeks to find space to think through the important
questions of life. Many British churches are also influenced
by Taizé-style services when offering contemplative
worship.
Accompanied by the Rt Revd David Hawtin, Bishop of Repton,
his wife Elizabeth, Derby University Chaplain The Revd Anne
Hollinghurst and the Diocese of Derby's Youth Adviser Alistair
Langton, the group of 25 15-30 year olds will travel out to
France on Saturday, June 20th to begin their week-long visit.
Bishop David said, "The Christian community at Taizé
practices a deep spirituality, fed by music and silence, and
promotes a deep involvement in the lives of the poor. At a
time when world leaders at the G8 Summit in Canada have been
challenged to help the people of Africa find a way out of
poverty, it's good to be going to such a community with young
people from Derby Diocese. The visit should challenge us all
as we explore Christian faith."
Sarah Barnsley (17) from Eyam said: "I'm looking forward
to being in a group of close friends who can experience God
together. I think that we'll not only be able to feel God's
presence but also see Him at work in peoples' lives in Taizé."
Louise Parsons, (21) who is reading a degree in Early Childhood
Studies at Derby University said: "I'm looking forward
to experiencing another culture and discovering different
ways of experiencing God. As a student I can feel quite stressed
at times and I'm hoping next week will be a tranquil and peaceful
experience. I hope I can bring that sense of peace back with
me."
The Revd Anne Hollinghurst added, "This trip is likely
to have a big impact on these young people. They will have
the time and space to think about themselves and others, what's
important in their lives and share a very special and moving
encounter with God with thousands of other Christians."
A short service on Saturday July 20th will be held in Derby
Cathedral before the group leaves. They return to Derby on
Monday, July 29th.
END.
