Linton Church members have launched a project to serve the
whole local community by opening Linton Brick Room as a coffee
drop-in and Internet Cafe. They want the room to be used to
develop local community groups, and to help local young people
and older members of the community to have a place to come
and meet their friends, get information and learn new skills.
The Brick Room has been used by the local community since
1883, and the redevelopment will add a new lease of life to
the building and the local community. Funding has been received
from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd), South Derbyshire
District Council, Community Partnership Scheme, Derbyshire
Community Foundation, TSB, Garfield Weston, Kath Lauro, J.R.
Robinson Trust and Francis Winham, which, added to the £13,000
raised by church members themselves, now only leaves a shortfall
of £20,000 for the project.
Work commenced on September 1st 2003, but the majority of
the refurbishment will take place from mid-October. It is
hoped to open the new Brick Room for business next May.
