| The
extensive process of appointing a new Bishop of Derby is now
underway since the current bishop, the Rt Rev'd Jonathan Bailey,
announced that he will retire in May next year.
The process involves formal groups of people from within
and outside the Church meeting to discuss the needs of the
county and the sort of person required to take on this demanding
role.
The dates and times of meetings are made public, but the
content of the meetings and related documentation is kept
strictly confidential to ensure that any prospective candidates
are not put under any undue pressure.
The Ven. Ian Gatford, Archdeacon of Derby, said: "This
is a period of mixed feelings for the church communities across
Derbyshire. There will be lots of excitement about who may
become the next bishop, but this is coloured by our sadness
that Bishop Jonathan will be leaving. His positive, inspirational
and approachable style of leadership has made him a very popular
bishop."
It is expected that when Bishop Jonathan's retirement begins
at the end of May 2005, there could still be a few months
before a new bishop is found. During this time of interregnum,
the Suffragan, or 'number two' bishop, the Rt Rev'd David
Hawtin, will be leading the diocese.
"It is possible we may not be announcing a name until
the autumn or winter months of next year," Mr Gatford
added, "but whenever it is, I am sure our new bishop
will receive a warm, Derbyshire welcome."
Members of the public can offer their views on the kind of
bishop they would like to see in Derbyshire by attending an
open hearing on Tuesday, October 12th, between 6.30pm and
7.30pm at Derby Cathedral.
Views can also be submitted to the Crown Nominations Commission
(CNC), the national body which is part of the consultation
process of appointing a new bishop. Contact them before 25th
October by post, c/o The Diocesan Registrar, Derby Church
House, Full St, Derby, DE1 3DR.
