CHURCHES GATHER FOR HISTORIC CELEBRATION

Christians from all over Derbyshire and beyond will be gathering in Repton on Saturday, February 18th, for a significant, historical celebration.

This year it is 1350 years since the ancient kingdom of Mercia (the vast area we now call the Midlands) received its first Bishop, a sign that Christian faith was taking root in the region. The Consecration of Diuma as the first Bishop of Mercia took place in 656, and as Repton was the capital of Mercia, it has a significant place in Christian history in the Midlands. Diuma was one of four monks who travelled to Derbyshire from Holy Island to preach the Christian Gospel.

The Bishop of Repton, the Rt Rev’d David Hawtin, has been leading the planning for the events that will mark the anniversary throughout this year. He said: "When it was decided in 1965 that Derby Diocese needed two bishops, Repton was the title chosen for the 'number two' Bishop, recalling the beginnings of the Church’s life in this region. I have always been interested in history and so have enjoyed searching out the details for this anniversary. Crucially, this is a celebration for all the Churches, not just the Church of England. It is a time to celebrate the beginnings of the Church in this region, the Church to which so many now contribute in lots of different ways.”

The programme for Saturday afternoon will begin with a workshop from 2.00pm – 3.30pm on the mission style of the Holy Island monks, taking place in the Fourhundred Hall at Repton School. After an hour’s break for refreshments in the school, there will be a Service of Celebration and Dedication at 4.30pm in St Wystan’s Church, Repton. The service will be attended by representatives of the regions’ Churches, including the Rt Rev’d Dr Alastair Redfern, Bishop of Derby, and the Rt Rev’d David Hawtin. The Preacher will be Brother Damian, Vicar of Lindisfarne.

All are welcome to join in the day. More events are planned throughout the year. For full details log onto www.derby.anglican.org.
